At a party the setting is most of the picture. Thirty people on a deck photograph as thirty people. The same thirty with the bay behind them, the shack lights coming on and the tide a long way out photograph as a night in Goa, which is the reason everybody flew down. That frame is only available from the air, and only for about an hour.
The hour, and why it ends when it does
Indian aviation rules permit drone flight between civil dawn and civil dusk. In South Goa in mid October the sun sets at about 18:14 and civil dusk follows at about 18:36; in mid November it is about 18:01 and 18:24. A party running from 17:00 to 22:00 therefore has roughly 85 to 95 minutes in which flying is legal, and they are the first 85 to 95 minutes rather than the last.
This is less of a loss than it sounds, because the window holds the best light of the night: the sun going down over the water, the venue lit, guests arriving, the sky still carrying colour. By nine in the evening a drone sensor records noise rather than footage. We fly the window on purpose and photograph the rest of the night from the ground. If an operator offers you aerials at eleven, they are either going to cancel on the night or fly outside the rules.
Shacks, villas and who has to agree
A villa or a private pool is the simple case, because the owner or the manager agreeing is usually the whole of it. A shack sits on public sand with other people's evenings going on around it, so we fly shorter passes, work from the water side and stay away from anyone who has not come to your party. The airspace is a separate question from the venue: parts of the Goa coastline are closed to drones whoever happens to run the bar.
Over the pool, not over the guests
Flying directly above a gathering of people is not permitted. In practice that changes very little, because the shots people keep are the wide ones that place the party in the landscape, and those are flown from the edge of the property at an oblique angle. We also keep the aircraft off neighbouring plots and away from guests who would rather not be filmed, which at a private party matters more than it does at a public one.
New Year, Christmas and the peak weeks
Late December is the busiest fortnight of the Goan year and the dates go early, so a New Year's Eve booking made in October is a different conversation from one made on the 28th. Two things are worth knowing in advance. The midnight fireworks cannot be flown, because midnight is hours past civil dusk; the sundown session earlier that evening can be, and that is where the film comes from. And district authorities issue drone prohibitions at short notice through the peak weeks, which we check again in the days before your date.
Birthdays and anniversaries have their own pages
If the party is built around a milestone birthday, the detail is on the birthday coverage page; for a vow renewal or a milestone year, see anniversaries. A party on a chartered boat sits under yachts and boats. This page is for everything else: sundowners, house and villa parties, pool parties, shack nights and the celebrations that carry no particular label.
